I've contemplated getting a roommate to share my condo (and the expenses that go with it.)
There are some definite pros and con's to shared living...
PROS
- Someone to share the living expenses (however if you own your own place, the rent from a roomie doesn't always cover 50% of your overall expenses.)
- Someone to share the occasional meal with.
- Good conversation.
- Expand your (and his/her) social network.
- Someone to share household chores with.
- Having to adjust your living habits to accommodate someone else.
- Maybe having to deal with his/her significant other more than a few nights a week.
- Making sure roommate pays his/her share of the bills on time.
- Reduced privacy.
It was an interesting experience interviewing possible candidates. If anything, I learned to trust my gut and really evaluate my own personality.
Finding/Screening a Roommate:
- First - DO YOUR HOMEWORK! Look at the current rental market in your area.
- Craigslist.org seems to be the most promising site in which to post your ad.
- Be as specific as possible about whats included in the rent. (Cable, Internet, etc)
- If you are a quiet, grad student type, then say so... There's no point in fielding requests that will clearly clash with your personality.
- Exchange emails, set up a time to meet so they can see the place, etc.
- If all goes well and he/she likes your place, be sure to get a rental application filled out.
- This is generally followed by a reference check and credit check.
- Once all this is done, you can go ahead and sign a lease.
- Try to keep lease terms as flexible as possible in case the living arrangement doesn't work out for one or both of you.
UPDATE: Today I read a fabulous blog by livingalmostlarge and had to share it with you. She sums up the room mate question fabulously! In my own situation, although it costs more to live alone, I'd rather be frugal and not deal with another person's drama, slovenly habits and inconsideration.....
